Hi Kevin,
> Loudness normalization, among other things, gives producers the _option_ to release competitive unsquashed recordings. Not everyone is going to exercise this option. All we can do is ensure that the option is available and make producers aware of the option.
Exactly. This has always been my point: I actually do not care much about the people that crush their masters - I will just not listen to it. More important is that the people who don't like to crush their masters have the freedom to make a beautifully dynamic album. And that is what normalization offers.
Of course Bob Ludwig is in a different position: he has to master the mixes from people that don't care - where he cares a lot. Of course he should tell this to everyone who likes to listen to him. So in the end there are two different stories:
1. The normalization story says: "let's make sure that flat tracks sound equally loud as dynamic ones so everyone has the freedom to choose his preferred type of sound.
2. The 'I love dynamical tracks' story says: "now we have the opportunity to sound equally loud with dynamic tracks, please let's make some great sounding albums again!".
First we have to make sure story 1 is told and that the playing field is indeed made equal again. Once that has been established, it is time to show how music can sound great again...
All the best,
Eelco
