Hi Eelco,

Great to hear that Buddy was a sympathetic ear ! It’s kind of annoying we didn’t think to speak to him earlier, I’ve also had his email in my address book ever since getting certified for MFiT. Never mind, better late than never, hopefully !

Using album normalisation by default makes perfect sense (with the benefit of hindsight, in my case) - simple but effective. I do think track-normalisation should probably be offered for users who prefer it, especially if they want to listen in noisy environments, but since they’re in the minority according to your excellent research this should be an “advanced option” if it’s available at all.

Ironic that Apple care about sonic integrity but have a system that can cause multiple dBs of playback clipping !

Bob L. asked:

It doesn’t, in my experience - in fact typically it over-estimates the loudness by a dB or two, to my ear, meaning that the best way to sound loud with Sound Check enabled is to be quiet…!

Something to do with your research that I’m curious about - is there any correlation between integrated loudness and minimum short-term loudness ? I’ve found my instincts draw me towards consistent maximum short-term loudness in both songs and albums, and I’d be interested to know how the two connect, if at all. My concern about using integrated loudness to judge the overall loudness of an album is that it could be “gamed” to a degree by people who choose to have short, extremely loud sections.

Finally, are your results available on the AES website, yet ? Will you be publishing them elsewhere ? I’d love to publicise them through my site. In fact, would you like to be a guest on my podcast and talk about them sometime ?!

Ian
