Eelco, don't get caught trying to use that argument! This is a red
herring. You (we) should never have to mention the softest track in an
album as a "virtue" or even a potential defect! It defuses and confuses
the reader. It defuses this important point: There are plenty of soft
passages in good albums that go well below the integrated loudness of
the entire album. There are plenty of wonderful-sounding albums with
soft songs that are more than 4 dB below the integrated loudness!
So it should never be necessary to even discuss the softest track as a
criterion or concern in favor of album normalization. An album has its
"center of gravity" and where that is normalized for the particular play
device is all that needs to be discussed. Once the skeptics agree that
if the center of gravity or the integrated loudness of the album is loud
enough on portable devices that have limited gain, then our work
promoting album normalization is done.
