Hi Florian,
> Once everyone is totally comfortable with that being the only way to level audio we can progress to more detailed work.
You should not underestimate the level of understanding of the big companies that we are dealing with. As soon as they show interest in the topic, they inform themselves real well. Tidal told us that they did not turn the current loudness normalization on iOS on by default _because it is track normalization only_. They are music lovers and care about the artistic story of an album. They did not like to turn track normalization on by default because it would harm optimal album listening. And another point: if you analyze the comments on hifi forums against normalization, it is always two things: 1. The audio quality goes down (EG not when using metadata that steers the same volume control as the UI). 2. Not all songs of an album should be equally loud.
So in fact track normalization is holding back companies from turning loudness normalization on by default. This is not a detail. This is the main thing...
Cheers,
Eelco
> But I appreciate that some of you (Bob K and Eelco in particular) already do some of the detailed work. It will be useful in the future at the latest, occasionally also very soon (like with Tidal).
>
> Many countries have not yet moved to loudness norm in general, and we need to change everyone's mindset. The evangelising is by far not over.
> So yes, Thomas and I will continue to preach the general idea :-)
> Please keep this in mind when communicating with audiences who don't have the level of understanding and expertise that we have.
>
> On a more specific note, I have also done Eelco's test (just now). Interesting stuff!
> And congrats to Eelco for setting this up. I am sure we will discuss results once Eelco has done his presentation. I can only say so much to my impression: it is fully in line with what I said above....

> Loudness normalization on as many platforms as possible as quickly as possible is way more important than details we tend to get caught up with.
>
> The next couple of years will be spent with the TV/drama people discussing loudness vs dialog and music folks discuss single vs album. Technicalities while cultural heritage continues to suffer.
