Greetings everyone!
I trust all is well with you, everything is fine and busy in Portland, Maine.
Every year people within The Recording Academy submit biographies of companies or individuals they think would be good to win a Technical Grammy Award. There is a committee who decides if any of the submitted bios meet the current definition of who is eligible, and if they are, pass along the bio for voting by those that can vote for such things.
My reason for writing you all is you can see the UK/Europe/Asia countries are pretty well represented in the Company field, while the Individual winners are more weighted toward American engineers.
I’m looking for any suggestions for either Companies or Individuals who might be over-looked.
Below is the current definition of the award, some past winners are a little dubious when held to this current definition. Most important is the “innovation” part, we are looking for companies and people who literally invented something that had never been done before (EMT echo plate etc.) that made a big impact on the recording industry.
This rules out companies who make elegant and even cheaper implementations of ideas to which others hold the patents. People can’t win for a “body of work” so, for instance, Doug Sax won based on his pioneering of direct-to-disk recording, building his own microphones and building a mastering studio with truly audiophile signal path.
If, at any time, any of you think of some good companies and names I’d appreciate it.
Warmest regards,
Bob L.
