I have 346 likes now, which is pretty good but I can always use more support!</div><div><br></div><div>Some news from these trenches: my internal Spotify contact wrote to me that his management told him it will be very difficult to implement the Karma button because the contracts they have with the labels force them to share _all_ revenue with the labels, regardless where it stems from. This is very important info and I'm therefore going to set the next step: convince the record labels of the need for this Karma button so they change their contracts. I have an appointment with the 'NVPI', which is the Dutch department of the IFPI, which is the association of record labels etc (<a href="http://www.ifpi.org">http://www.ifpi.org</a>). My goal is to convince them to recommend their members to embrace the Karma button. </div><div><br></div><div>Step by step forward and still enjoying the view.</div><div><br></div><div><blockquote type="cite"><div dir="ltr">The proposal is essentially to create a mechanism to give tips to artists. </div></blockquote><br></div><div>There is one essential difference: with the karma button you don't get anything back in return (not 'in this lifetime'). With tip you receive the gratefulness of the waiter or whoever you offer the tip. I can imagine in the long run this forced mutual affection can indeed lead to corruption like your podcast claims (well... sort of).</div><div><br></div><div>Cheers,</div><div>Eelco</div><br><blockquote type="cite"><div dir="ltr"><div><br></div><div>The proposal is essentially to create a mechanism to give tips to artists. We're big on tipping here in the US or at least big on not paying people well and assuming they'll make up for it in tips. As you might imagine, this is not always a fair system and has some unexpected consequences. Here's a podcast about it if you're interested - <a href="http://freakonomics.com/podcast/should-tipping-be-banned-a-new-freakonomics-radio-podcast/">http://freakonomics.com/podcast/should-tipping-be-banned-a-new-freakonomics-radio-podcast/</a></div><div class="gmail_extra"><br clear="all"><div><div class="gmail_signature" data-smartmail="gmail_signature"><div dir="ltr">Kevin Gross - AVA Networks</div></div></div>

So the streaming companies don't make much money and can only become profitable if they become so big that they have a monopoly position (this seems to be the major goal in the current internet driven company world...). The stream revenues will still go to the labels (or other master owners), there's nothing to do about that. The Karma button goes around all this and by adding the Sena organization to the equation I make sure that the 'makers' like musicians and producers are paid with the Karma donation, not the 'creators' like composers (who should get their money via the labels).</div><div><br></div><div>Cheers,</div><div>Eelco</div><div><div class="h5"><br><div><blockquote type="cite">
<div text="#000000" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"><p>Eelco's proposal is a very very good start, but it seems to me
it's really a workaround for the streaming companies who don't
respect the artists who should not be getting fractions of a penny
per play. Correct me if I'm wrong, here's how I think of it:<br>
</p><p>We're not going to ever see their books, but what do you think
the balance sheets of any named streaming company look like. If we
factor in R&D and the salaries of their employees, and the
costs of the streaming network (which are considerable) at a
certain point after the R&D has been recouped a lot of this is
profit that has to go to the artists. So in the long run they have
to pay up, and Eelco's proposal is a workaround that let's them
off the hook. If their structure is such that they aren't making
enough income to pay the artists then the whole thing is an
exploitation of the artists that bring subscribers to their table.<br>
</p><p>I do want to donate to the artists and support Eelco's proposal,
but let's remember, this reduces the pressure on the streaming
company to pay the artist themselves.</p><p><br>
