                    <div dir="ltr">Dear all,
                      <div><br>
                      </div>
                      <div>I am running Apple's iOS 11 Beta on my phone,
                        and I discovered that the manufacturer has made
                        a good step in loudness normalisation
                        architecture.</div>
                      <div><br>
                      </div>
                      <div>I have understood that previous versions of
                        the iOS operating system have used fixed point
                        architecture and therefore it was important to
                        not exceed peaks before the device volume
                        control stage. This led to the problem that apps
                        had to run hot if the user volume control was
                        low.</div>
                      <div><br>
                      </div>
                      <div>Now in iOS 11 it is possible to run an
                        overmodulated signal through the dedicated Music
                        app without any distortion, which means there's
                        a floating point architecture.</div>
                      <div><br>
                      </div>
                      <div>There's still a limitation of the adjustment
                        range, and of course the algorithm is still not
                        ITU BS.1770. It is only possible to adjust a
                        file within -12 to +12 dB's. But with a floating
                        point architecture, this is actually not a
                        problem, because you can adjust very quiet
                        material to a louder floating point target than
                        it would have been possible "straight in the
                        file". The range should still be a little wider
                        to cover all the material.</div>
                      <div><br>
                      </div>
                      <div>Music app still addresses the peaks by
                        default, and it is not possible to exceed 0dBFS
                        with its initial setting but it was possible to
                        test this by overwriting the audio file iTunes
                        normalisation metadata which contains the peak
                        and loudness information.</div>
                      <div><br>
                      </div>
                      <div>Let's hope this is a good step for the
                        loudness normalisation in other apps too.</div>
                      <div><br>
