Thomas has done considerable research on intersample peaks and
made demonstrations including listening to the S channel for the
distortion.

My own research into peak distortion (especially in the third
edition of Mastering Audio) points out that just measuring the
peak does not describe its audibility. Researcher Jim Johnston
(described in my book) points out that there are tonal and atonal
types of peak distortion and if it's atonal and transient it may
not be egregious to the listener. For example, a short snare drum
overload may be completely inaudible. But a solo piano peak
overload will be painfully audible. So you have to look at the
whole story when evaluating the sonic problems of peak overloads.

Lastly, I'm not a big fan of overusing peak limiting when trying
to push levels "to the top".... I find that in the vast majority
of cases the clamping effect of peak limiting beyond, say, 1 dB
can be more damaging to the sound then just letting it clip. I'm
not advocating clipping, I'm just saying that a sensible solution
has to take all these issues into account.
