Hi Bob,
> Of course the "85 dB" is ficticious.... maybe it's tied to the sensitivity of Apple Ear buds. But it could be VERY far off for any other earphone.
Only softer. The max earbud sensitivity and max output voltage of smartphones etc is regulated by Cenelec and checked before import into the EU is allowed. If both are at maximum, the max SPL with a -10 LUFS test noise is 100 dBA. Above 85 dBA a warning should be given.
In the new Cenelec rules the limit of the volume control may be replaced with a dose meter. I had good hopes that Apple would have implemented that dose meter and added more gain (for -23 LUFS material), but apparently (reading Ian’s report) they added a seriously crappy limiter and turned it on by default - very bad!
Let’s see what Buddy tells us.
Cheers,
Eelco
