Hi Bob,

Buddy Judge told me that due to an algorithm problem some time ago there are still a few peak level errors in Apple’s database. They tracked down most of them but occasionally a new victim pops up. I once found a Rite of Spring recording that was 10 dB off.

Buddy asked me to forward him the album name, whenever I came across such an affected track. I have forwarded your Beethoven track to him already and I am sure he will fix it. Please feel free to send him the track data too in case you find another one in the future. Buddy Judge <buddy at apple.com>

By the way, I think you mean “Kristian Bezuidenhout” from South Africa. He is an incredible pianist! I saw him playing a breathtaking cadenz in one of Mozart’s piano concertos once with the Orchestra of the 18th Century that he conducted for a while when Frans Brüggen had died.

All the very best,
Eelco

> Attached is a 5:26 Victoria Mullova & Kristian Beuldenhout Beethoven Violin Sonata movement on iTunes that peaks at -2.8 dBFS on the left channel at 4:26 on the 3 loud chords.

> Sound Check says it needs to be raised to +8.8dB! It technically has 6dB of distortion at that peak if Sound Check was being used.
>
> BS-1770 says it has a Program Loudness of -27.7, so if iTunes had used ITU as a measurement it would have raised it even more!
