Google Play has never had loudness normalization. I talked to them a few
years ago and they were aware of complaints and I pointed them to our
whitepaper and to normalization technology. They were thankful but
indicated not to expect any immediate improvements. My impression then was
that Play Music was not a priority for Google. I guess nothing has changed
there. Does Google Play Music have any market significance? Spotify, iTunes
and Pandora all have normalization.
I've found myself traveling and casually listening to music on smallish
Bluetooth speakers recently and I do notice that unsquashed music doesn't
work very well on those things regardless of any twiddling you do with the
volume controls.
I just listened to Avenged Sevenfold and I don't think the 2016 album
sounds as "produced" as previous stuff. It sounds like a live performance.
Guitars sounds and vocal performances are ungilded. Even though there is a
lot of headroom, the mix is not very dynamic.
