Dear Bob,
I came across your post from August again and gave it another thought. I would recommend the following individual, group and company:
1. Alan Blumlein. He invented everything that is or can be used in stereophony:
- microphone setups: XY, MS, AB with shuffling, sphere microphone with shuffling, double AB with crossover.
- stereo cutting head for vinyl.
If Fletcher received the Technical Grammy, Blumlein deserves it too.
2. The ITU srg3 group who wrote the BS1770 standard. This standard is arguably the most important standard for audio in this decade and it has huge impact on all produced audio in the foreseeable future. The work of EBU PLOUD and ATSC would not have been possible without it.
3. Audio Ease. They did not invent convolution reverb of course, but they were the first to make it available to a large audience and thus they changed the way music and especially films are mixed in a fundamental way.
All the best,
Eelco

There is a committee who decides if any of the submitted bios meet the current definition of who is eligible, and if they are, pass along the bio for voting by those that can vote for such things.

Most important is the “innovation” part, we are looking for companies and people who literally invented something that had never been done before (EMT echo plate etc.) that made a big impact on the recording industry.

People can’t win for a “body of work” so, for instance, Doug Sax won based on his pioneering of direct-to-disk recording, building his own microphones and building a mastering studio with truly audiophile signal path.
