I've done a little search in my files. There's not many publications about statistical data of audience complaints related to audio. I found this:

In Jean-Paul Moerman, "Loudness in TV Sound", AES preprint 6039, http://www.aes.org/e-lib/browse.cfm?elib=12650, page 8:

"We started this paper with viewer complaints. At Belgian National Broadcasters VRT, located in Brussels, about 140 complaints pro year were about sound. Since the implementation of the master plan there was a spectacular downfall to 3 complaints in 2003. This demonstrates again the efficiency of the master plan."

Mark that the 'master plan' incorporated implementation of a dynamic range compressor - this was back in 2004...

All the best,
Eelco
